Director, Trade Marketing

Victoria Newitt Recruitment Inc has been retained by Rocky Mountaineer to search for a Director, Trade Marketing.
Reporting to the Vice President, Global Marketing & Communications this position is responsible for the leadership and direction of Rocky Mountaineer’s Trade Marketing strategy which is designed to fully leverage marketing opportunities globally through the trade channels. 
This position contributes to the successful implementation of the organizations strategic imperatives, has oversight and management of a range of cross functional global projects and provides B2B leadership and expertise to the broader organization.
Key Areas of Accountability
Key Accountabilities:
Strategic Management:
  • Develop and lead the partnership marketing strategy globally
  • Provide leadership, direction and effective management of the Trade Marketing team and cross-functional working groups to achieve a high-level of performance and deliver high quality advice and service to stakeholders
  • Provide expert advice to key stakeholders on B2B channels, trade accounts and global market insights to encourage innovative practices and support the delivery of business outcomes
  • Collaborate with key internal partners to develop partner engagement strategies and strategic growth plans to deliver both short and long term growth
  • Build mutually beneficial relationships with industry partners including airlines, DMO’s and other 3rd parties to deliver key business outcomes
  • Direct, coach, develop and support a team of ten, including a team member based in China
Marketing Leadership:
  • Oversee Partnership Marketing Managers in the delivery of all partnership marketing campaigns and trade engagement initiatives globally. Activity includes, but is not limited to:
    • Cooperative marketing plans with trade partners, B2B email programs including nurture stream development, trade advertising, management of the Agent Portal website, B2B online training program delivery, agency management, development of Point of Sale materials and B2B collateral, training and event support
  • Develop and lead the overarching marketing strategy for Rocky Mountaineer’s newest region, China, including:
    • Oversight of the agency relationships in China
    • Development of a .cn website
    • Be the business lead regarding research needs for the market
    • Act as the bridge between the China based team and headquarters to ensure the broader organization understands the work happening and in China, how this region is developing and the impacts into other areas in the business
  • Understand and disseminate consumer and market insights that will impact strategic and tactical marketing decisions across the team and company 
  • Build and manage strong relationships with key stakeholders to provide strategic insights on business needs, help resolve complex issues, deliver high performance across cooperative marketing programs and find new opportunities to leverage
  • Establish partnership marketing standards and performance targets and analyze key data to ensure program results are measured and achieved. Recommend ways to improve efficiencies  
Operational Activities:
  • Manage and optimize the Trade Marketing budget including staffing and expense priorities
  • Develop key trade promotions, taking into consideration financial and operational impacts
  • Review processes and procedures to identify opportunities to improve efficiencies and implement best practice
  • Participate in regular business and market development meetings both locally and internationally 
  • Provide presentations to the organization and Board of Directors on strategy and team initiatives 
Required/minimum and desired qualifications education, experience and skills.
Education / Certifications / Knowledge
  • Bachelor Degree in Marketing or Business
  • Ten plus years’ Trade Marketing experience in medium to large sized organizations 
  • Five plus years’ management experience
  • Experience in the travel industry is a must
  • International work experience across multiple markets would be an advantage
  • Strong strategic, critical thinking and analytical skills to resolve complex problems, develop creative solutions, and objectively evaluate options to weigh out risks and benefits
  • Demonstrated excellence at cultivating and nurturing key client relationships
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Ability to make decisions and effectively communicate information 
  • Excellent people management skills in growing, developing and coaching direct reports to high performance
  • Exceptional negotiation skills with a goal to find a win-win for all parties at the table 
  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills 
  • Adaptive and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Oversight and accountability of managing complex budgets 
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
